Take a behind-the-scenes look at “I Died in Irpin”, Anastasiia Falileieva’s animation documentary short film – one of the most compelling and pivotal films of recent years. ✨
On 24th February 2022, the first day of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Anastasiia and her partner flee Kyiv to join his family in Irpin, but they are caught up in the conflict much sooner than they could ever have imagined.
The director describes these turbulent hours through her own testimony.
By combining charcoal animation with personal archive footage, the film deliberately blurs the lines between memory, emotional shock and fragmented reality to convey this fractured memory.
A process in which animation becomes simultaneously both a record and a testimony as well as a call for justice.
“I Died in Irpin” premiered at the 2024 Annecy Festival and was screened at many festivals worldwide winning numerous awards.
🕯️ “I Died in Irpin” is an intimate exploration of a traumatic historical moment, where the director’s personal narrative and poetic charcoal drawings reveal the collapse of memory under the violence of war.
A short film, but one with exceptional impact.
This Making is part of our collection in partnership with The Animation Showcase, bringing together films presented at Annecy and now eligible for the Oscars season.
